Five-step guide to safely cleaning your laptop keyboard

Laptop keyboard easily collect debris, dust, and germs, and regular cleaning will not only keep your keyboard beautiful, but also extend its life. Follow these easy-to-follow, expert-approved steps to safely clean your keyboard and keep it looking new.

Step 1: Turn off and unplug the power cord

Before cleaning, always be safe. Turn off and unplug your laptop to prevent any potential short circuits during the cleaning process.

Step 2: Remove loose debris

You can use a can of compressed air to blow away loose dirt, debris, and dust that has accumulated between the keys of your keyboard.
Hold the can of compressed air upright to avoid splashing, and spray at about a 45-degree angle to cover all nooks and crannies.
Alternatively, use a soft brush to swirl around the keys to remove debris. Focus on cleaning the edges where dirt tends to accumulate.

Step 3: Wipe the keyboard

Moisten a microfiber cloth with a small amount of distilled water. Avoid using tap water, which may contain minerals and easily leave water marks. Gently wipe each key, working from left to right and top to bottom. For stubborn stains, add a small drop of mild dishwashing liquid to the water, but make sure the cloth is slightly damp and not dripping.

For keys that are stuck or have a lot of dirt underneath, carefully place a small piece of microfiber cloth on a toothpick and carefully wipe to remove the dirt.

Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia-based cleaners to clean your laptop keyboard, as they can damage the keys and surface coating.
